Backyard Cleaning: Where to Start and How to Stay on Top of It

A neglected backyard is more than an eyesore — in Nigeria's humid climate, it becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes, rodents, and snakes within weeks. Overgrown grass, stagnant water, and piled refuse are open invitations for pests you really do not want near your home.

Start with the grass. Cut it low and consistently — once every two weeks is a reasonable rhythm during rainy season when growth accelerates. After cutting, rake up all clippings immediately. Left on the ground, wet grass clippings mat together, trap moisture, and attract insects.

Next, eliminate anything holding stagnant water. Old tyres, buckets, broken flowerpots, and blocked drainage channels are the primary mosquito breeding sites in most Nigerian compounds. Walk the yard deliberately and remove or overturn every container.

Sweep concrete areas and dispose of refuse properly — do not burn waste near your walls or fence, as soot stains are notoriously difficult to clean.

Finish with a perimeter check. Clear any bush or overgrowth touching your walls, as this is where snakes and lizards enter.

A clean backyard is not just about appearance. It is genuinely a health decision.
