Fighting Mould in Humid Nigerian Homes

Mould is one of the most stubborn problems in Nigerian homes, and humidity is the reason. In cities like Lagos and Port Harcourt where moisture levels stay high year-round, mould doesn't need much encouragement — a poorly ventilated bathroom, a leaking roof, or condensation around air conditioning units is enough to get it started.

It appears first as dark spots on walls, ceilings, and grout lines. Left alone, it spreads quickly, damages surfaces, triggers allergies, and makes rooms smell permanently damp regardless of how often you clean.

The most effective weapon against mould is ventilation. Open windows daily, use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens, and never leave wet clothes sitting indoors for extended periods. Fix leaks immediately — even a slow drip behind a wall creates the perfect mould environment.

For existing mould, a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach applied directly to affected surfaces and left for 15 minutes before scrubbing works well on tiles and walls. Avoid dry brushing — it releases mould spores into the air.

For severe infestations on ceilings or inside walls, skip the DIY approach entirely. Call a professional. Surface cleaning won't solve a structural moisture problem.
