Hantavirus is a virus carried by rodents — particularly rats and mice — that humans can contract through contact with rodent urine, droppings, saliva, or contaminated dust particles in the air. It may not dominate health conversations, but it is a serious condition that deserves far more attention than it gets.

Poor environmental sanitation is one of the biggest risk factors. Rodents are attracted to spaces with food waste, clutter, poor waste disposal, and unsealed entry points. By the time an infestation becomes visible, the environment may already be significantly contaminated.

Yet there are no approved vaccines and no specific treatments — supportive care and early ICU access are the only options available. When there is no cure, your environment becomes your first line of defense.

Prevention remains the strongest strategy: keep spaces clean and dry, manage waste properly, seal entry points, store food securely, and act early at the first sign of rodent activity. Effective rodent control isn't just about eliminating pests — it's about addressing the environment that invited them in.
